Jack DeSalvo has been teaching students of all ages for more than 30 years whether they are preparing a classical audition, mastering jazz chord changes or learning enough songs to play with a rock band. Interested in playing blues? Slide guitar? Folk finger-picking? De Salvo is expert in most styles. He also teaches, bass guitar, mandolin, composition, and beginning through advanced notation skills for jazz, classical and pop composers.
Former students include John Flansburg of They Might Be Giants, Steve Brown of Trixter, Minnesota-based jazz virtuoso Joel Shapira and many other successful players.
Jack began studying guitar at the age of eight with Lou Sabini, learning to read music and listening to rock 'n' roll. By the time he was a teenager Jack was playing with garage bands and doing local gigs. His teacher at that time, Al Faraldi, sent him to study classical guitar with Leonid Bolotine, former violinist with the NBC Orchestra under Toscanini. During this period Jack also studied composition and ear training with composer Ariadne Mikeshina who was a student of Richard Strauss. Jack then attended Berklee College of Music and studied George Russell's Lydian Chromatic Concept. Further studies with ECM recording artist Bill Connors convinced Jack to incorporate classical technique into jazz playing. DeSalvo went on to play concert halls, jazz clubs and in recording studios worldwide.
